The New York Times > Washington > Red Cross Finds Detainee Abuse in Guantanamo

The New York Times > Washington > Red Cross Finds Detainee Abuse in Guantanamo – What? You’re telling me that not only have we held these prisoners without legal representation, a statement of charges, or concern for the Geneva Convention, but that we’ve been torturing them for the past 3 years, too? What a surprise!

And the GW Bush administration has just received a “mandate” from the US citizens, which must mean this is how the American people want it. I sure am glad I’m not in the military, because I doubt any American POW is going to ever be treated humanely again, now that the world knows how we’ve been treating others.

We’re back from Akumal, Mexico! I’m writing up a travelogue of the journey, which was awesome fun.

Auto Express

Auto Express – Yet another item for my Christmas wish list – an electric car that seats 4, goes 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds, and has a top speed of 230 mph.

The New York Times > International > Middle East > The Disappointed: For Israelis, the Question: Can Trust Be Restored?: “‘It’s not really a matter of Arafat at all,’ he said. ‘It’s us, Jews and Arabs, and we need to sit down and settle this mess, without the Americans. After all, we lived together for 3,000 years or so.’” – That’s what I like to hear!

What has changed with Colin Powell?

In August of 2003, there were rumors that Colin Powell wouldn’t stick around for Bush’s 2nd term. He squashed those rumors by saying, “I serve at the pleasure of the president.”

Now, 15 months later, he has resigned, stating, “It has always been my intention that I would serve one term.”

So, what happened in the past 15 months?

The New York Times > Washington > Military Analysis: With Capture of Falluja, a Goal Is Met. What’s Next?: “American military commanders say the weeklong assault that has wrested most of Falluja from insurgent control has achieved nearly all their objectives well ahead of schedule and with fewer pitfalls than anticipated.” – In other words, Mission Accomplished! Oh, wait, haven’t we heard that one before?

Bye bye A9 toolbar

Well, I’ve tried it for over a week, but I’m removing it now. That’s the A9 Toolbar for Firefox. The thing is just so freakin’ slow that it makes Firefox unusable. I was originally very excited about it because it can keep bookmarks synchronized on different computers running Firefox. Maybe I have more bookmarks loaded into the thing than it’s designed for. Anyhow, I’m dumping the A9 toolbar and now I’m going to use the Bookmarks Synchronizer extension for Firefox. It keeps bookmarks in sync by putting them on an FTP server of your choice, then when your browser starts or stops, it re-synchronizes and merges.

Bose SoundDock

– I think this thing will have to go on my Christmas list. But I do wonder how it sounds. Is the sound quality better than the pair of $20 PC speakers I have in the kitchen now for playing music when I’m cooking?
