Woodpecker Thought Extinct Rediscovered – Yahoo! News

Woodpecker Thought Extinct Rediscovered – Yahoo! News: “Interior Secretary Gale Norton said, ‘Second chances to save wildlife once thought to be extinct are rare. … We will take advantage of this opportunity.’”

I’m not sure what to think of that. Coming from Gale Norton, I suspect the part she was thinking but didn’t say was, “…and when I say ‘save wildlife’ I mean ‘save’ as in ‘save stamps’ – that is, capture them and put them in a drawer.” Maybe I’m too tough on Gale Norton. But can you fault me for it?

tax the churches

I’m not sure if I’ve said this before, but the recent political uproar over confirming Bush’s already-rejected judge nominees reminds me…

I believe that if churches and church organizations are going to get directly involved in politics, they should lose their tax exempt status.

By “directly involved” I mean spending a significant amount of their time lobbying, telling their members who to vote for, running ads that attack members of one political party or another, etc.

That said, Focus on the Family is not a tax exempt organization (donations to it are not deductible on your federal taxes). And that’s a good thing. That means that, like the Sierra Club, they can legally do extensive political lobbying, which they have certainly be doing!

Welcome to TV Turnoff Network

Welcome to TV Turnoff Network – I plan to participate in TV Turnoff Week, once again. You should strongly consider if, if you haven’t already. Take that time you’d normally waste watching television and instead…

go see a play
read a good book
spend time with someone you love
listen to your favorite music
take a hike
cook an extra special meal

Personally, I’m hoping to use that extra time to write a play, compose some new music, prepare for the Conviality 2005 Raft Trip and play Guillotine with Beth.

Pope Benedict XVI – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: “We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as definitive and has as its highest value one’s own ego and one’s own desires” – And with my luck, I’ll probably get elected King of this dictatorship!

Are green cars winning?

I see that GM just posted a 1.1 billion dollar loss for the quarter. Wow, that’s a lot of money. I found this graphic interesting. It’s from the New York Times and shows that GM lost 2.7% market share in the first quarter of 2005, while Toyota gained 2.7% market share.

GM gives us the H2, and Toyota gives us the Prius. GM loses money, and Toyota makes money. GM loses market share, and Toyota gains market share.

I wonder if these events are related, or just random chance.
