what I did on Earth Day

Warning: Super boring post coming up.

In case you’re wondering what I did for Earth Day…

I did some laundry, cleaned house, talked to the editor and animator of Exploding Corpse Production #4 about what I’m looking for in the way of animation, and then rode my bike to the mall to meet a friend to talk about doing a sci-fi action short film which would be Exploding Corpse Production #5 or #6 or maybe #7.

Then I rode my bike back home and caulked the cracks in the driveway so the water won’t seep down in there to cause the concrete slabs to shift.  I fired up the Weber and grilled some beer brats and boneless pork chops, and installed a water heater blanket.  And I played a video game some and then watched “Who Killed the Electric Car?” on DVD.  Not in that order.

Memo to self for future reference:

It takes roughly 18 minutes to bicycle from home to Wahoo’s Fish Tacos at a moderate pace.  It takes roughly 19.5 minutes to make the return trip, though 30 to 60 seconds of that was from not taking the right turn into the bike path.

If they’d ever build a pedestrial/bicycle bridge over the train tracks here (can you see the path people have worn through the vacant lot to get to the bike path and Highway 36 underpass?), as the city has said for years they plan to do, then the ride would speed up by at least a couple minutes.  That would be cool, and would get me to fish tacos faster.

Today is Earth Day.  So suck it, Neptune!

oily

On my way home from work this afternoon, I stopped by Napa Auto Parts and picked up a funnel, 4 quarts of oil, and an oil filter for my motorcycle.  And then, I changed the oil and filter and got ugly black chunky oil all over the garage.  I feel so manly!

But I did feel a sense of accomplishment, since I have never changed the oil on a motorcycle, and haven’t changed my own oil on a car for probably 18 years.  So I celebrated by going to Pho 120 for supper.

The waiter there – and he’s always there – speaks pretty bad English, though it’s getting better over time.  Because he’s literally always there, and I go there enough, he recognizes me.  Tonight he asked in his best broken English why I was eating alone tonight.  I explained that my wife is on vacation.  And so we had a little conversation that probably made him feel good about his improving English skills.  He asked where she went for vacation and I explained to him that she went to lots of places, including Kansas and Texas.  He then asked if I rode a “moto” and he made a hand gesture like someone riding a bike.  I realized he meant “motorcycle” and answered that yes indeed I rode my motorcycle to the restaurant.  He said that the weather has been good for riding moto.  I agreed.

Indie films make Broomfield’s big screen debut : Entertainment : Broomfield Enterprise

The Broomfield Independent Film Series is finally launching!  I’ve been working on putting this thing together for a year and a half now.  Above is a link to the Broomfield Enterprise article about it.  Recognize the handsome fellow in the photo above?

Grindhouse

I went to see “Grindhouse” this afternoon.  Beth’s out of town for the next two weeks, traveling around the country watching birds.  So I want to do all the stuff I wouldn’t otherwise do if she was here.  And “Grindhouse” was one of those things.

It was a hilarious set of two films, with some even more hilarious fake trailers thrown in before and after.  In fact, I’d almost be willing to pay to go see it again just for the “trailer” for an imaginary film called “Machete”.  Anyhow, contrary to most reviews I read, I think I enjoyed the zombie movie (“Planet Terror”) more than the driving movie (“Death Proof”) but they were both funny and over the top.

A couple little things I didn’t expect: Zoe Bell, who is a famous stuntwoman, plays herself in the second segment and does what appear to be totally amazing stunts.  I want to learn more about how they did it, because she did some stuff that I just can’t believe could be made safe enough to try.  Also, Bruce Willis has an almost-cameo role as a military officer in the first segment.  Quentin Tarantino (who wrote and directed “Death Proof”) and Rose McGowan both have roles in both films.

If you don’t appreciate action movies, turn your nose up at B-movies, or get grossed out, don’t go see these films.  But if you’re like me, I highly recommend them.  And you get two movies (plus some shorts) for the price of one, without even having to sneak into another theater!

Parallels Desktop for Mac

Well, I can’t really say I’m too impressed with Parallels Desktop for Mac.  I’ve been trying for several days now to get a few OSes to work reliably in virtual machines on my Mac using the Parallels software.  And the only one that really works well so far is DOS 7.1.  I’ve installed Windows XP 2 or 3 times and it never works quite right.  One time I installed from the CD, but now it doesn’t boot.  Another time I used the software to “transport” an existing WinXP system into Parallels.  That one doesn’t boot either.  My first Windows 98 installation failed, and now my second one doesn’t seem to have any of the correct device driver support.  So I’m not so excited about this software as I was before.  Maybe I should have tried it more thoroughly before paying money for it.

stupid Mac tricks

I bought Parallels Desktop for Mac, which is software that allows you to install and run other operating systems on your Intel-based Macintosh computer.  I wanted to install Windows XP on it, so I could run Windows software.  But then I got carried away and did something off the scale geeky.  I installed MS-DOS 7.1.  And Windows 98.  Yes, on my Mac.
And if I can figure out how, I’m going to install Microsoft Windows 2.03.  Most of you probably have never even heard of that version of Windows.  I saw it one time, on the PC of one of my college roommates, before Windows 3.0 came out and started the Microsoft Windows revolution.
