Google Maps is cool

Google Maps just keeps getting better. In addition to having a feature where you can see what a building looks like from the street, they now have business reviews submitted from readers like me. I’ve written a few reviews of local businesses, and you can see them here.

This is in addition to my restaurant reviews on BroomfieldRestaurantReviews.com

New Stem Cell Method Could Ease Ethical Concerns – New York Times

New Stem Cell Method Could Ease Ethical Concerns – New York Times
Two teams of scientists are reporting today that they turned human skin cells into what appear to be embryonic stem cells without having to make or destroy an embryo — a feat that could quell the ethical debate troubling the field.

I can’t help but be cynical about this. I fully expect the right wingers to now think up some new excuse why stem cell research must be stopped. But we’ll see. Maybe this new technique – if it does really work – will get around the controversy and get us (America) back on track in the field of medical genetic therapy research. Personally, I’m hoping we find a cure for Alzheimer’s before I’m old enough to get it, and preferably before my parents are old enough to get it!

Third Annual Day-After-Thanksgiving “Wing It” Movie Making Spectacular

I’m putting together a team to participate in the “Third Annual Day-After-Thanksgiving “Wing It” Movie Making Spectacular” which is on November 23, as you might guess. Here are the rules. If you’d like to help me out or would like to enter your own team, please let me know!

Welcome to the Third Annual Day-After-Thanksgiving “Wing It” Movie Making Spectacular. This year, we’re trying something a little different. It’s a fast film-making event with multiple teams. Each team will create a short film on the topic “The Last Time I Saw Santa Claus.” Genre, location, style, script, etc. are all up to you, so be creative! We’ll show all the films at a local film event in the near future, and put them on a DVD as a memento for everyone.

Here are the general rules:

1) The first line of dialog must start with “The last time I saw Santa Claus…” and the film must stay within that very general theme.

2) Each team may consist of 1 to 20 participants.

3) The edited film must be no longer than 120 seconds in length, not including credits. Opening credits must not exceed 10 seconds, and closing credits must not exceed 30 seconds.

4) You can do as much pre-production work as you want in advance, except for shooting footage. All original footage must be shot on the day after Thanksgiving. Stock footage and music may be used if you have rights to it.

5) Editing can be done until Wednesday December 5. By that deadline, each film needs to be turned in on either MiniDV tape or QuickTime file. The submissions will then be edited into one single video, comprised of the submitted videos in random order.

6) The completed video will be screened on Tuesday December 11 at the monthly Group 101 screening.
